Nitrite as Corrosion Inhibition

Nitrite is widely used in closed cooling water as corrosion inhibitor. Reserves of nitrite concentrations be mantained in the range of 600-1200 ppm as NO₂^- . This will sufficiently provide protection of iron and steel from corrosion. And the suitable pH must be mainatined above 7.

The Kit, K-7004B measures levels of Nitrite in water from 0-300 ppm as N. The kit, K-7004B uses the Azo Dye Formation Method, in which Nitrite diazotizes with a primary aromatic amine in an acidic solution to produce a highly colored azo dye. The intensity of the color is directly proportional to the concentration of nitrite in the sample. Nitrate will not interfere. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) NO2-N.

Chemistry: In an acidic solution, nitrite diazotizes sulfanilic acid (a primary aromatic amine), then couples with 4,5-dihydroxynaphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid to produce a highly colored azo dye. The resulting pinkorange color is proportional to the nitrite concentration in the sample. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) NO2-N. To convert results from ppm NO2-N to ppm NO2, multiply by 3.3.
